about
"Harold the King" is a trip into the archives. Written during the 'Charlatans at the Garden Gate' era and recorded in 2012 for 'CAVES' --this song didn't make either record. The vocal is the original scratch track from the live session. Nine years later, it feels appropriate to put it out.
lyrics
harold the king
harold the king
carried on after five legacies
climbing the heap
tending the sheep
and assuming his place at the top
harold the king
and his new legacy
all was built from a fine treasury
gathering from
bets he had won
and the favors he gave to the suits
fortress of stone
high on the plain
and his head was high so the arrows took their aim
and they started the war
started the war
that the farmers and workers would fight
harold the king
planted the scheme
and he asked all the soldiers to pray on their knees
to the god they had made
a fair weather friend
who would help them not fear of their death
god only shrugged
as the men rushed to death
and the king he lies safe
in his fine feather bed
hail to the king
harold the king
cause the ones who have are the ones that will keep
high on the plain
in a fortress of stone
only money and power can design
and your god only shrugs
as your men rush to death
and the kings they lie safe
with their crowns on their crown
and their hearts hard as stone
in their fine feather beds
